MY FASHION WEEK EXPERIENCE: DESIGUAL SS 18

MY FASHION WEEK EXPERIENCE: DESIGUAL SS 18
It should be no secret that September is the January of the fashion industry. Much like new years when everyone is making resolutions, getting gym memberships, and following superstitions. The beginning of September rings in a mission to update wardrobes, devour bible thick magazine issues, and cautions all designers not to use green thread the night before a show. As I prefer to call us “fashion minions”, are not waiting on a ball to drop for one night. This season we are all waiting for the doors to open at Clarkson Square for one week and remain glued to our high tech screens for live streams of our favorite designers.
The first day of fashion week felt like a breathe of fresh air. All the shopping for something new to don, blistered feet from high heels, and running out of Uber credit so you can make it to other shows in time (and soothe those poor blistered puppies) without the train delays, is definitely worth it.
My highlight of the week has to be the Desigual fashion show. No question. This wasn’t your usual fashion show. Instead of the classic “strut”, these models were dancing/vogueing on the runway. The intricate garments made a huge statement exuding diversity. The experience truly exceeded my expectations and so did the choreography. I applaud Desigual for putting together such a standout show and creating garments that supplied a beautiful and unique representation of culture.
What I Wore…
Over the Labor Day weekend I was sifting through the infamous “soho strip”, pacing up broadway from TriBeCa just to find something to wear to fashion week. All the stores had deals and of course new in season items which is typically a common phenomena with retailers strolling out racks of shiny duds this time of year. The January of Fall, Duh. With so many options I just didn’t know where to drop my long saved cash. As I’m getting closer to Houston street, Desigual beckons me with its vivid storefront and exotically antique looking decor. I hesitantly step in as I’m exhausted from the long walk. There I am greeting by pleasant sales associates, who might I add, made my experience enjoyable with their gregarious personalities.
Though I felt tired my eyes were widened by the stunning decor of champagne glasses hanging from the ceiling, dim lighting, and embroidered garments. As soon as I slip on their “Ainhoa” jacket, my heart screeches “I’m wearing this to fashion week!!!!”  I was glowing in that jacket and since I don’t “glow” often, at least I could wear something to make me feel like I am.
The “Ainhoa” jacket has such striking yet subtle details that make it a standout piece for any occasion. It’s comfortable and lightweight with added warmth in the knit sleeves. Pulling off sequins, mismatch sleeves, and embroidered lapels is quite an excruciating task but finding the right piece to fit this description? Now that’s a manhunt! I’m just glad I waltzed in to Desigual and conquered that challenge. To make my experience even more satisfying, Desigual gave me this awesome canvas duffel with my purchase! I’ll be getting lots of wear out of this bag for sure! Not only was I ecstatic about my jacket but with my store experience as well. Needless to say I will absolutely be returning to Desigual for more purchases.
I didn’t want to take much attention away from the jacket so I paired it with a white high neck lace embroidery top from Zara and a black frilled skort also from Zara. Black and white is an obvious choice but I wanted to make due with items I already owned. Since the best thrift store is always in your closet I decided to check their first and it worked. The texture in the top gave my outfit something more to look at than your average white tank. The short frilled bottoms allowed for more attention to my jacket without any distractions. As much as I was dying for a red pair of boots I didn’t want to have a cut off look to my outfit. I went with a pair of Kelsi Dagger open toe booties. The tan color nearly matches my skin complexion which elongates the leg, giving a more long and lean look. This is essentially necessary when you are my height (specific height not relevant). To finish off the ensemble I found my Kate Spade 60’s radio clutch on the shelf of my closet. I like to call this a “conversation piece” because it always gets so many compliments and attracts a lot of attention since it’s such an unusual piece without being too flashy.

NYFW LIBERTINE F/W 18

NYFW LIBERTINE F/W 18

It’s New Year again in the fashion industry. Time for New Yorkers to strut mini skirts, fur coats, and heels in 30 degree weather. With all the street photographers ready to attack, catching a minor cold might be worth it. I have been keeping a keen eye on the Libertine clothing brand since the September shows in 2017. Now that I’ve finally been given the privilege to attend the show, I couldn’t help gushing over every piece that passed me on the runway. The eccentric L.A. based brand is known for using bright colors, bold custom patterns, and jeweled embellishments. Needless to say, Libertine clothing follows their own rules of fashion.

With each passing model, my eyes were instantly captured by some serious bling. One design in particular was a women’s black blazer with a sleek slip underneath adorned with watches dangling off the garments. TREND ALERT: Watches are no longer limited to your wrist. This was art in itself. Giving me the impression that time doesn’t control us. We each have our own timing and move according to our own clocks. Much like fashion, the clothes are not made to fit people. People are made to bring the clothes to life. Libertine epitomizes this statement as I find their brand to be one that encourages people use individuality in their style.

As for the finale, I had a hard time keeping my phone still while I was recording because I wanted to jump out of my seat and dance along with the models. This wasn’t your usual finale with models clapping their hands to end the show. Libertine ended the show with models dancing down the runway creating excitement in the audience. The entire gallery became filled with smiles and louder cheers. Cheers to Libertine for having such a lively show and alluring collection.

Heart Eyes Sunglasses

Heart Eyes Sunglasses

These sunglasses have me feeling #totaly80s baby! Even though I am 90s baby. I’ve been searching for a pair of heart shaped sunglasses and finally got my hands on a pair at my favorite boutique Mulberry and Grand. I came across this small spot which is literally a hole in the wall on Bleecker street, but inside it’s so much more. With a shabby chic atmosphere, this shop has a unique selection of delicate jewelry, canvas totes, and sunglasses to name a few.

The Heart Eyes Sunglasses make me feel like I’m one of the emojis. These are perfect for sun gazing at the city piers.

Another one of my favorite items from Mulberry & Grand are their well made canvas totes. I’m more of a leather handbag girl myself but sometimes I need something more casual for when I’m at dance, hitting, the gym, or just a day of running errands. You can never go wrong with a trendy tote, but then again you don’t want to look like you’re still in high school. Mulberry & Grand offers a selection of unique graphics and quotes printed on their totes. The bag also features sturdy leather straps that haven’t failed me along with two functional pockets on the inside and outside of the bag which actually fits my iPhone Plus. Not only do they have trendy totes, M&G offers a generous selection of handmade tassels that add a pop of color to your tote giving it a bit more personality.

If you’re in need of an accessory update, I HIGHLY recommend taking a spree inside Mulberry & Grand. I guarantee you’ll be hearing “that’s so cute where did you get that?” after rocking their pieces. I know I did!

Kate Spade Ma Cherie Antoine Sima Bag

Kate Spade Ma Cherie Antoine Sima Bag

This bag is perfect for sassing up a casual daytime outfit. The Kate Spade “Ma Cherie Antoine Sima” cross body clutch adds a sleek yet quirky touch to a dinner party or a night out with friends. The bottom of the bag is flat and expands as you place more items inside. It’s also spacious enough to fit my keys/keychains, my iPhone Plus, lipstick, and a small hairbrush. I usually can’t carry bulkier items like these in my more delicate clutches. The Sima clutch doubles as a cross body with its removable gold chain.

Saffiano leather is used for this bag which makes it less likely to be scratched. Since I don’t own an actual French Bulldog, at least I get to where one! This Ahhh – dorable Frenchie makes for a versatile accessory that goes with many outfits adding a unique yet simple touch.

WHAT TO WEAR

Honestly, with this clutch you really can’t go wrong. Black and white are two colors that go with EVERYTHING, but sometimes when a piece contains black and white being used together it becomes challenging to pair with multiple colors, but it doesn’t have to be. That’s why I’m here to help you spin the color wheel and throw in some patterns to make creating your best look be effortless.

PATTERNS

Florals, plaids, stripes, you name it. The bold contrast of black and white in this Sima clutch makes it easier to pair with delicate florals, pinstripes, and madras plaid. Pairing these types of patterns with bold contrasting colors (even black & white) gives the outfit a more balanced look and feel without being to busy. Check, houndstooth and gingham patterns in a smaller size are also a good choice to compliment your Frenchie clutch.

COLOR

Wearing the right color is essential for any outfit and if it involves a particular accessory you want to wear it with. My personal favorite when it comes to experimenting with black and white pieces, is to add a pop of yellow. Wearing the color of the sun seems to scare some people away from wearing it. Adding a neutral tends to mute the color a bit. Another good choice is sky blue and also any light blue that is more on the pale side. Mint and emerald green are among to colors that would work well with this clutch. If you’re on the fence about experimenting with the color spectrum I recommend layering your look with a neutral color jacket. No matter which way you decide to wear your Kate Spade Ma Cherie bag, you’re definitely amping up your wardrobe with an eye catching statement piece.

Betsey Johnson Press Event

Betsey Johnson Press Event

Strawberries, pineapples, and cherries. Oh My! Betsey Johnson’s summer collection is sure to have your mouth watering with tropical fruit inspired pieces. Known for her outrageous runway shows, nostalgic handbags, and boutiques that are all pink, Betsey Johnson‘s summer lineup refused to disappoint.

Pietro Lolita in Soho, which is also known for all things pink was the perfect venue for the press release. This event was filled with summer vibes from the moment I walked in. Mannequins were sporting pink wigs and the were models dressed in summer frills. The swimsuit line up is giving an old school sense of the 1950s with pin up style one piece suits, high waist bottoms, and bandeau tops. While Betsey is known for bold floral prints and stripes, she seems to be elevating the classic prints by adding something sweet. The classic gingham and stripe pattern have now been embossed with jeweled cherries on the shoes and an all over lip print added to the stripes. Mixing patterns is quite the challenge with fashion but, you can save yourself the headache by having Betsey Johnson in your wardrobe this summer.

This collection doesn’t stop at patterns. The event featured an array of nostalgic handbags with the intention of making our mouths water. Count on Betsey to turn your favorite summer treats into a go to summer handbag. A crab and cherry shaped leather zip clutch are sure to become your vacation essentials. The classic summer straw bag has now been transformed into a pineapple and strawberry shaped wristlet that can also be worn as a cross body. You can now enjoy a  firecracker popsicle without the mess with Betsey’s leather popsicle gold chain cross body bag. Mr. Softee might owe you a tip! Take a tip from me and do not skip out on this collection.

Overall, Betsey Johnson’s press event was the ultimate introduction to the season’s new trends. It had everything you could want in a tropical getaway without the travel headache. If you’re looking to amplify your style this summer, look no further than Betsey Johnson’s new summer lineup.
