Alex and Ani Harry Potter Time Spinner Necklace

Alex and Ani Harry Potter Time Spinner Necklace

“Three turns should do it” said Albus Dumbledore in “Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban.” The ever risky Time Turner worn by Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) had the ability to make wizards and witches go back in time to alter past events. Or in Hermione’s case, take an extra potions class.

I love when I can get my hands on a unique piece of jewelry that reflects my interests and who I am. Since I’m a major fan of the Harry Potter series (books & movies) it was only fitting that I have Hermione’s time turner from the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Alex and Ani is my go to source for jewelry when I’m looking for a piece that resonates with me. From birthstones to zodiac signs, you can count on Alex and Ani to have jewelry that fits an array of personalities and beliefs. To be honest, I never expected to find my beloved fan fiction series as themed jewelry, like the time turner (which I’ve been wanting for a long time) at Alex and Ani. But I’m so happy I did!

The Alex and Ani Harry Potter Time Turner has a unique design that differs from the one used in the film. Made with rafaelian gold and Swarovski Crystal, the necklace has a delicate look that adds a statement to a casual outfit. If you know Hermione Granger, then you know she’s not one to strut in heels wearing the latest trends. After all, you can’t be occupied trying to dress for the runway when you’re casting spells at Hogwarts, or flying away from creatures in the Forbidden Forrest.

The Time Turner has the function to spin like it does in the movie. The knobs on the outer ring however do not turn.  It’s placed there to add detail to an already stunning piece. The Swarovski Crystals mimic the look of a miniature hourglass. Around the hourglass is an inscription that reads “I mark the hours. Every one. Nor have I yet outrun the sun.” The chain itself features an adjustable strap to control the length of the chain. Keep in mind you have to pull this necklace over your head since there is no clasp.

What makes the Alex and Ani Time Spinner different from the movie version and the ones being sold at Barnes and Noble, is that it’s origins are less easier to spot. At first sight you wouldn’t know that it’s a replica inspired from the Harry Potter series. Instead, it gives the impression of a time spinner that could have easily been your grandfathers but amplified to be more fashion forward. Barnes and Noble actually carries a replica in their Noble Collection line of Harry Potter products that is nearly exact to what is shown in Prisoner Of Azkaban. Of course it’s larger, bulkier, and easier to spot because it was made to be just like Hermione’s Time Turner from the film. There are also a lot of fakes of the Noble collection being sold on eBay for much cheaper prices with lesser quality.

Wether you like the exact replica from the Noble Collection or the cheap fakes being sold online, the Harry Potter Time Turner is a must have for any Potter fan. The Alex and Ani version is a more wearable piece that doesn’t distract from the outfit, though it is still a conversation starter for being so unique and pretty. The Alex and Ani Time Spinner is a beautiful necklace to have for anyone who appreciates the meaning of the time turner as described in the books and movie. Any Potter fan would be ecstatic to have one. The fact that it’s Alex and Ani though, makes it even more special.

Elena Bornstein at York College

Award winning contemporary artist, Elena Bornstein has an exhibit at York College. The former York College professor has her airbrushed paintings on display that is inspired by traveling experiences throughout different countries she’s visited. Bornstein’s paintings portray a unique, vibrant use of color and precise architecture.

The enticing display of paintings seems to be a well kept secret as students (including myself) were not aware of this exhibit. As my journalism class stepped into an empty art gallery, I spoke with Justin Capera while my fellow classmates looked curiously at Bornstein’s paintings. Capera, who is a senior at York College and majors in Journalism has an interest in art. He says he knew about York’s art exhibits until our journalism professor spoke about it in class.

“I found her work to be very vibrant. I enjoyed the colors and enjoyed the way the art made me feel. It made me feel joy”, said Capera. Capera also says that the college doesn’t let students know about exhibits or sends any emails.

I agree with Capera as I myself didn’t know about Bornstein’s work on campus until I read the school’s newspaper, Pandora’s Box.

Aside from not being well informed about Bornstein’s exhibit until I went to class, her work is something to be shared with more students on campus. Her paintings took my mind off of the common school related worries that most students deal with. It was a pleasant and relaxing experience. Bornstein’s painting truly captures they viewers attention, forcing them to step foot into the places she’s been too and taken her inspiration from.

Anthropologie Floral Puffer Coat

Anthropologie Floral Puffer Coat

It’s soft. It’s plushy. It’s suede. It’s pretty! It’s the total “It” factor for your coat rack this winter. The Floral Puffer from Anthropologie. This cold weather “must have” keeps you warm and looking cute. If you’re a New York native you’ve heard this statement too many times: “this is not the weather to be looking cute.” The Floral Puffer has proved this theory wrong.

Sweater: LOFT

I was expecting this to be a bulky, heavyweight jacket. To my delight it was actually lightweight and allowed for a sweater underneath.

I’ve been seeing pink velvet puffer jackets all over the gram and many online retailers. I was tempted to get one of these cotton candy-esque puffers but, the more I kept seeing them, the less unique it became. What’s the sense in investing in a statement piece that every girl on campus, the gram, and in the boroughs will have. It’s just another basic (although very cute) fad and I’m not interested.

Velvet is a trending resurrection from the 90s and I’m all for it. But I also have a have a habit of making my fashion choices all Kaye’d up by choosing pieces that have a certain flare that resonates with me. It’s not style if it doesn’t reflect who you are. Aside from the whimsy floral pattern and beautifully washed out navy blue color, suede is what really adds uniqueness to this coat.

Suede is a timeless material and is commonly used for footwear. You will also find it used for many pea coats (particularly a raw edge cut), moto jackets, and some handbags. While velvet is a beautiful material, it can also look a little cheap depending on the garment. Suede typically gives a garment (like a shift dress) a structured and polished look.

The floral puffer is made with a light suede fabric that makes the floral pattern appear neatly placed on the jacket without being too flashy. It adds subtlety to an already eye catching piece.

Let’s get Kaye’d up!
When it comes to patterns and prints, I like to seek out the smallest dosage of color used, to add a matching one color bold piece to bring out the little bit of that particular color that was used in the print. For the Floral Puffer Coat, I noticed small hints of light pink and lilac. Perhaps light pink would be the obvious choice for anyone to work with. I thought so too. Initially I sought to put a light pink knit top underneath the jacket. It ended up looking too clashed. This is because the main color of the jacket already has a washed out look to begin with. The pastel pink I chose only made it worse because pastels are technically washed out colors making them to appear light. Pink and blue are total opposite colors and in this case was not a good mix. The icy blue sweater I’m wearing brought out the floral print even more because it is a similar shade of blue used on the print. It created a nice contrast without being distracting and keeps the attention on the jacket itself. After all, the Floral Puffer will be the showstopper to any outfit.

NYFW: Leanne Marshall A/W 18

NYFW: Leanne Marshall A/W 18

The fashion industry is beginning to have a shift in the realm of traditional models. Fashion designer and season five winner of the hit television series Project Runway, Leanne Marshall, featured larger sized women on her runway.

New York Fashion Week is notoriously known for long legged models dressed in designer clothing. Realistically, women of different sizes will purchase the garments being displayed on the runway. Marshall kept her signature panache of elegant gowns while having average and plus sized women dressed in her gorgeous gown.

The sounds of cameras snapping photos began to flare up as the first plus sized model stepped onto the runway. The sound of chatter in the audience soon turned into applause which is reserved for the finale of the show. Soon after the first plus sized model left the runway, more full figured women began to grace the runway in Marshall’s gowns along with average sized women.

This trend was seen earlier during fashion week with designer Christian Siriano who welcomed actress Danielle Brooks known for her role as “Tasty” in “Orange is the New Black”. As for Leanne Marshall, she continues to set the stage for a diverse group of women with the desire to be fashion forward and dressed in clothes that compliment their figure.

It’s clear that the fashion industry needs more designers who are willing to expand their target audience to women with larger figures. It has been a long known fact that the fashion industry favors women with slender figures and taller heights. Leanne Marshall’s collection was not only breathtaking with chiffon gowns and vibrant colors, she inspired many women in the audience to feel confident in what they wear.

MY FASHION WEEK EXPERIENCE: DESIGUAL SS 18

MY FASHION WEEK EXPERIENCE: DESIGUAL SS 18
It should be no secret that September is the January of the fashion industry. Much like new years when everyone is making resolutions, getting gym memberships, and following superstitions. The beginning of September rings in a mission to update wardrobes, devour bible thick magazine issues, and cautions all designers not to use green thread the night before a show. As I prefer to call us “fashion minions”, are not waiting on a ball to drop for one night. This season we are all waiting for the doors to open at Clarkson Square for one week and remain glued to our high tech screens for live streams of our favorite designers.
The first day of fashion week felt like a breathe of fresh air. All the shopping for something new to don, blistered feet from high heels, and running out of Uber credit so you can make it to other shows in time (and soothe those poor blistered puppies) without the train delays, is definitely worth it.
My highlight of the week has to be the Desigual fashion show. No question. This wasn’t your usual fashion show. Instead of the classic “strut”, these models were dancing/vogueing on the runway. The intricate garments made a huge statement exuding diversity. The experience truly exceeded my expectations and so did the choreography. I applaud Desigual for putting together such a standout show and creating garments that supplied a beautiful and unique representation of culture.
What I Wore…
Over the Labor Day weekend I was sifting through the infamous “soho strip”, pacing up broadway from TriBeCa just to find something to wear to fashion week. All the stores had deals and of course new in season items which is typically a common phenomena with retailers strolling out racks of shiny duds this time of year. The January of Fall, Duh. With so many options I just didn’t know where to drop my long saved cash. As I’m getting closer to Houston street, Desigual beckons me with its vivid storefront and exotically antique looking decor. I hesitantly step in as I’m exhausted from the long walk. There I am greeting by pleasant sales associates, who might I add, made my experience enjoyable with their gregarious personalities.
Though I felt tired my eyes were widened by the stunning decor of champagne glasses hanging from the ceiling, dim lighting, and embroidered garments. As soon as I slip on their “Ainhoa” jacket, my heart screeches “I’m wearing this to fashion week!!!!”  I was glowing in that jacket and since I don’t “glow” often, at least I could wear something to make me feel like I am.
The “Ainhoa” jacket has such striking yet subtle details that make it a standout piece for any occasion. It’s comfortable and lightweight with added warmth in the knit sleeves. Pulling off sequins, mismatch sleeves, and embroidered lapels is quite an excruciating task but finding the right piece to fit this description? Now that’s a manhunt! I’m just glad I waltzed in to Desigual and conquered that challenge. To make my experience even more satisfying, Desigual gave me this awesome canvas duffel with my purchase! I’ll be getting lots of wear out of this bag for sure! Not only was I ecstatic about my jacket but with my store experience as well. Needless to say I will absolutely be returning to Desigual for more purchases.
I didn’t want to take much attention away from the jacket so I paired it with a white high neck lace embroidery top from Zara and a black frilled skort also from Zara. Black and white is an obvious choice but I wanted to make due with items I already owned. Since the best thrift store is always in your closet I decided to check their first and it worked. The texture in the top gave my outfit something more to look at than your average white tank. The short frilled bottoms allowed for more attention to my jacket without any distractions. As much as I was dying for a red pair of boots I didn’t want to have a cut off look to my outfit. I went with a pair of Kelsi Dagger open toe booties. The tan color nearly matches my skin complexion which elongates the leg, giving a more long and lean look. This is essentially necessary when you are my height (specific height not relevant). To finish off the ensemble I found my Kate Spade 60’s radio clutch on the shelf of my closet. I like to call this a “conversation piece” because it always gets so many compliments and attracts a lot of attention since it’s such an unusual piece without being too flashy.
